And I find it so isolating, even working together with Pete, we have ear plugs and can't talk to each other, I much prefer working together with hand tools so we can talk and enjoy the bird song around our property :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12874273438983052621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9027191706980748713.post-87300360140898024942015-06-09T11:50:19.861+10:002015-06-09T11:50:19.861+10:00That is an interesting perspective Kev, if you had...That is an interesting perspective Kev, if you had time, you could do everything by hand! Again, using the appropriate tools when you need to get something done quickly vs saving money and taking longer to do it by hand.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12874273438983052621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9027191706980748713.post-40811385876881270842015-06-09T11:45:10.648+10:002015-06-09T11:45:10.648+10:00And you need to factor in running and maintenance ...And you need to factor in running and maintenance costs, usually a hand tool will be cheaper to use as well as buy :) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12874273438983052621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9027191706980748713.post-3650798407651523602015-06-09T11:44:28.209+10:002015-06-09T11:44:28.209+10:00I agree, its a question of appropriate technology ...I agree, its a question of appropriate technology and having a back-up when technology is not available.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12874273438983052621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9027191706980748713.post-12723554168494548302015-06-09T08:09:25.951+10:002015-06-09T08:09:25.951+10:00I don’t see the need for any of them, for me, the ...I don’t see the need for any of them, for me, the most offensive garden tool is the leaf blower.
So noisy! I like to potter around my plants in quiet.
But saying that, we do have a ride-on-mower and whippersnipper for the 5 acres around the house. And a chainsaw for maintaining the other 20 acres of our property... Talking about noisy... ;-)Marijkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13577363925336203716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9027191706980748713.post-68209269733445179982015-06-08T16:57:57.936+10:002015-06-08T16:57:57.936+10:00Some tools are needed but like Sherri says it depe...Some tools are needed but like Sherri says it depends on the size of the garden. I have an expensive (manual) set of secateurs but hen I have over 400 fruit trees growing at the moment as a cottage industry, I could justify the expense due to how much I use them - would I switch to an electric set? I don;t think I would but then time isn't such an issue as I don;t think they'd speed me up. My trade as a carpenter is a different matter, there speed and efficiency are very important so power tools generally win out but it's what the customer demands, even if they don;t realise it. When they chastise me and say "How did the old carpenters manage without all this gear" I often think that the carpenters of old wouldn't have been expected to fit the all the skirting in a house in a couple of days! The question is always, do we really need this? But maybe that's because we don't have a lot of disposable income to waste, lol. On acreage, there are quite a few mechanised tools we need to help manage the land, things like chainsaws, brush cutters, mowers and a chipper. But we much prefer our hand tools where we can use them.Chris https://www.blogger.com/profile/13715819899708384147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9027191706980748713.post-3197788534806695192015-06-08T08:35:25.760+10:002015-06-08T08:35:25.760+10:00Is there a place for power tools in the garden? I ...Is there a place for power tools in the garden? I guess that depends on the size of the garden. If someone is living in a unit and only has pot plants on a patio or balcony then possibly not. On the other hand they are necessary when living on acreage. Although in today's world having back up methods for being able to manage the same tasks without technology could be a good idea in case of supply shortages in fuel or power for whatever reasons. I was working on the subject of appropriate technology last month on my permaculture course. So this subject has been on my mind lately. I enjoyed reading this post.Sherrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16322236537807536688noreply@blogger.com
